American History Brought to Life Through the Stories of America's Heroes and Heroines.
History's Heroes was founded by Rob Mercer and John Derrick who were looking for entertaining yet educational videos for their school-age children (each has three). Surprised by the lack of options for American history, the two fathers decided to fill the need themselves. In 2006, they built a production studio and started re-creating the stories of American heroes and heroines on DVD. Designed for ages 8 and up, each DVD features:
- 3-D animation to infuse the stories with fun, immediacy, and realism
- Spoken narration, original soundtracks, and the voices of professional actors to enhance both the viewing appeal and learning value
- Originality and state-of-the-art production values to capture and hold children's attention
- A companion web site for children (www.historysheroes.com), featuring the stories of American heroes and heroines, activities and games, and American history homework help
American History as Entertainment for Learning Retention
The company's vision - history as entertainment and entertainment as history - supports schools in their uphill battle to teach the events, concepts, and values of American history to school children. Although history tests scores for 4th, 8th, and 12th graders have risen slightly since 2001, the U.S. Department of Education's 2007 "Nation's Report Card" documents that more than half our high school seniors have only a weak command of the basic facts of U.S. history. Several studies also report that fewer classroom hours are being spent on history, due to the math and reading focus of the No Child Left Behind Act.
As a result, the company produces two editions of each DVD - one for families and the other for teachers and homeschool parents for use with American history curriculum. The Education Edition includes two different movie lengths, discussion questions, quizzes, student project ideas, and other teaching resources.
The studios launched its History's Heroes DVD series with Patrick Henry: Quest for Freedom and Paul Revere: Midnight Ride.
The company would like to thank Wade and Jessica at www.konos.com for the right to use the name History's Heroes.
